Their role is to help businesses who want to be sustainable, create interesting and understandable messages. They help create exposure for clients with an message to tell, as long as it is a benefit to the planet or people who need help.

Matt’s talk was about the philosophy of Republic of Everyone and how they help create interesting and innovate messages for their clients. He show how they work with charities and NGO’s as well as working with big business to create a better future.

After his talk, Matt sat with second years students as they presented their Advanced Diploma Major Projects to him. Their projects have to be a community based initiative, so Matt is perfectly placed to help the students with their design and marketing strategies. This was a very fruitful exercise all round as it gave the students a chance to showcase their work and also to gain some valuable insight for an industry heavy weight.

So impressed by the Institute and facilities Matt has offered to return again next year to help the students with their projects. Plus Republic of Everyone will also take IDU students for work experience at their offices in Sydney. This will hopefuly become a permanent arrangement with IDU travelling to Sydney on a regular basis.

5 Things I’ve Learned.

Former de Luxe & Associates designer, and now IDU lecturer, Emily Pacey, talked to both graphic and fashion students about five things she has learned since leaving university. Emily talked about events and projects that have influenced her in her development from graduate to professional designer. Backed by examples of her work, Emily presented useful lessons for students to help them improve themselves as designers.

From being brave enough to say “NO” to a client when you believe they are asking for the wrong thing, to just being able to get up and walk away from your desk, leave your computer behind and go and sketch ideas. Experiment, be bold, try new things, and don’t settle for your first idea. If you only produce one idea, then yes it’s your best. But it’s also your worst. These are just some of the lessons Emily passed on to the students. For all five, you should have been there.

IDU Welcomes Promostyl

What is Promostyl? Promostyl is a worldwide fashion trend research and design agency.

Early in March, Anita McAdam of Promostyl visited the Institute of Design Ulladulla, from Sydney, and provided both Graphic and Fashion Design students with an interactive presentation, detailing Promostyl’s expected trend forecast in design.

In doing so, Promostyl showcased their new set of trend books, which extensively outlined design concepts and influences of design, expected to be seen in design in the coming 24 months. The presentation also focused strongly on anticipated colour, textiles and print trends.

The day gave students a revealing insight in to future trends on a worldwide level and importantly gave them direction for their upcoming design projects this year.

Fashion student, Jessica Burns, found the presentation very edifying and advantageous for her 2011 major projects. “Anita was really descriptive and informative in response to trend forecasting… I wish it could have gone for much longer.”
